Net Work: an interactive artwork designed using an interdisciplinary performative approach

چکیده
In this paper we outline an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to problem solving that can be characterised as performative as both the goals and solutions develop over time through an open-ended process of trial-and-error. We describe two projects where this methodology has been successfully applied. We irst give an overview of the CELL project where the performative approach led to a signiicant change in the way that scientist Neil Theise investigated stem cells. The success of this project directly led to the work which is the main focus of this paper: the design of Net Work, an interactive artwork that consists of a grid of autonomous buoys that emit different coloured light in response to the environment and the state of neighbouring buoys. We describe our performative approach to building the Net Work prototype and outline in detail its control system which is based on Ashby’s homeostat model. The paper concludes with a short discussion of some of the beneits and pitfalls of an interdisciplinary collaborative approach to problem solving.

Net Work: Lessons from Collaboratively Designing an Interactive Artwork
For the last 18 months we have been involved in designing and building the software and hardware for a prototype floating interactive artwork, Net Work, that is constructed from autonomous light-emitting buoys that respond to their physical environment and the state of neighbouring buoys. The completed artwork will be installed at a London location (such as the dockside basin adjacent to Wappin...
متن کاملInteractive Art Analysis Based on Baudrillard’s Hyper reality Theory, a Case Study of Digital Interactive installation
The contemporary philosopher Jean Baudrillard, one of the postmodernism theorists, considers representation in the contemporary world as a factor in the disappearance of reality. In his view, the main feature of new arts is not the expression of artistic beauty, but communication with the audience and expression of the artist’s ideas. In interactive art, the presence and role of the audience in...

متن کاملAlmost Human: the Study of Physical Processes and the Performance of a Prosthetic Digital Spine
Almost Human is an investigation of interdisciplinary performance through music that looks to the self to try to further understand subjective performance practices in expression, gesture and sonic output. This text presents experimental methods of examining and creating music through kinaesthetic and electronic-assisted means within instrumental, dance and interactive works. The extraction of ...
